Rolling Green Golf Club

USA, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia
5.7 (6)
Designer: William S. Flynn
Course Opened: 1926

Another fine Philly course designed by William Flynn, this track occupies a small site with some substantial gradients, but Flynn did a fine job building solid golf holes and routing his layout across steep hills and ridges. The course has an especially memorable set of greens, the targets set on ledges, plateaus or built into the inclines or shelves are outstanding. The track is mostly played back and forth and up and down the slopes and could be accused of lacking variety, but the quality of the individual holes is high enough to overcome any perceived routing issues. The best is probably the Calamity-style par three 14th hole, which resembles the 10th hole at Berkshire Red in England and heads over and along a deep gully with a sharp falloff to the right. The other par threes are also rock solid.

Despite some holes on the more undulating back nine being uncomfortably narrow, either because of trees hard against one side of the fairway or due to narrow fairway cuts, this is a fine layout with good greens, and attractive property and enough fun to keep most thoroughly entertained.
